“Hockeytown” is the city of Detroit and it’s suburbs. It extends throughout southeastern Michigan, even into parts of Ontario and Ohio. But you’ll find that Hockeytown has no physical borders.
What defines Hockeytown is the people. Within this area are people with an undying passion for hockey that starts with the home team: The Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings are the heart and soul of Hockeytown.
Since 1926, the Red Wings have provided these special people with great hockey. The Wings were one of the original six teams that formed the National Hockey League. Since that time, the Red Wings brought home the coveted Stanley Cup Championship eleven times. The people of Hockeytown have been treated to watching some of the greatest players ever to play the game: Howe, Delvecchio, Lindsay, Yzerman and the list goes on and on.
This is the foundation on which Hockeytown is built.
This is the foundation that resulted in more organized hockey leagues and teams than anywhere else in the world. From Mites, to Squirts, to Over 30. Where new ice arenas are going up all the time to accommodate this hockey addiction.
This is the foundation that gets Moms and Dads out of bed on dark, cold winter mornings so their sons or daughters can skate. And the dream is always the same: maybe my kid will be the next Gordie Howe or Steve Yzerman.
This is Hockeytown. Home of the Detroit Red Wings since 1926. And home to the most passionate hockey fans on the planet.
This is hanging up at the Joe Louis Arena. I had to edit it because the one that’s hanging up stated we only brought home 9 Stanley Cups. Obviously was made before 2002 and 2008. :o)
